Just what exactly is a total hip replacement? Total hip replacement entails a complete procedure where the existing hip jointis replaced with artificial implants. The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The socket is a cup shaped pelvic bone and the ball is the top of the thigh bone, called the femur. In the course of action a metal ball is loaded into the femur and this is inserted into a plastic cup embedded in the pelvis. This prosthesis is usually mounted in place with a bony cement. If the patient is a younger person, a cementless prosthesis is used which allows growths from the femur to attach to it and graft it in place. This has a lengthier life than the cemented prosthesis.
